Singer songwriter Sharon O'Neill says she is honoured to be receiving a membership to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame tomorrow night at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.
Born in Nelson and finding success on the Australian and New Zealand charts with her song Maxine, O'Neill remained active throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, with six studio albums during her career and 11 award wins between 1978 and 1985.
When she received a phone call asking her to come to the VNZMAs, "my first thought was maybe I'm presenting an award and then he said 'well no, it's you' and I was gobsmacked actually, I couldn't believe it," O'Neill told TVNZ1's Breakfast today.
The music scene has changed a lot since her heyday, she said, with the main change being the ease with which a person can find fame from humble roots.
"In the old days, I tried to think of the whole world - but now you can think of the whole world and do the whole world from your room," she said.
The VNZMAs take place tomorrow night at the Spark Arena in Auckland.
