Indy Yelich lives in New York City and had help with her poetry from Billy Ray Cyrus.

Lorde's sister Indy Yelich has opened up to TVNZ1's Seven Sharp about coming out of her famous siblings shadow as she releases her first book of poetry.

At just 19 years of age, Indy is living the dream in New York, with the accomplished teenager having her first book of poetry Sticky Notes published.

"I didn't really know what I was doing before I came here. I mean I was writing a book, and I wasn't really sure what path I was headed in," Indy said.

She said the response to her poetry has been a very positive one.

"I got these really amazing responses. People were telling me, you know I just broke up with my boyfriend, and I really appreciate this."

The Kiwi wordsmith has even had help from Miley Cyrus' dad Billy Ray.

"I showed him a poem, and he read it, and it was kind of unreal. He was just lovely. I remember I was kind of down in the dumps.

"I was like, oh, poetry, it's not really something that you can pursue as a career, stuff like that. And he goes, 'No! You have to be true to yourself and true to your heart'."

The talented teenager proving talent runs in the Yelich family.
