Bohemian Rhapsody explores Queen’s battle to stand out.

Freddie Mercury, the Queen frontman who owned the stage and dressed to kill, is getting ready to posthumously strike a chord with Kiwi musicians with the auctioning of his costumes on TradeMe .

20th Century Fox, the studio behind the just-released Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, has turned four of Mercury's most iconic and widely-recognised costumes and turned them into limited-edition replicas – the only set in Australasia.

The set has been gifted to music trust Play It Strange, where it's hoped the costumes will capture the attention of a collector, a super-fan – or perhaps even performer.

"Freddie has a vision for people, wanted to inspire people with his music. Not just everyday people, but people who didn't think they could do it – outsiders," 20th Century Fox's Stephen Meadows said.

Play It Strange says the money raised will go a long way in helping teenage songwriters to 'break free'.

Play It Strange's Debbie Little said, "Queen epitomised the power of great songwriting and the effect it can have on the world, and Play It Strange runs competitions that bring out the great songs from young New Zealand people".

"There are many great Freddies in New Zealand, they just need to be brought out and tell their talent to the world."

Mr Meadows said, "Freddie would be proud and pleased to know his legacy is being celebrated – and he’s inspiring young musicians like himself".
