Jennifer Aniston thinks we live in a "very sexist society".

The Cake actress hinted that she had personally experienced gender inequality in the film industry.

She explained: "We're very much a sexist society. Women are still not paid as much as men ...

"I've been up against that in negotiations myself."

The 45-year-old actress also defended fellow film star, Renée Zellweger - who sparked rumours that she had cosmetic surgery when she was photographed with an astonishingly different look in October 2014 - insisting that women are heavily scrutinised for their appearance.

She told the New York Times: "There was a big whistle blown out on her, and it was unnecessary. Did she really look that different? ... You can't hide those pouty little lips.

"I really do think you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

You either are too fat -- 'Oh my God, she's gained weight, getting chubby, mid-40s spread!' -- or 'She's so skeletal, get some meat on her bones!' I've been on too-thin lists. I've been on what-happened-to-her lists."

Meanwhile, the former Friends star - who is engaged to Justin Theroux - recently revealed that she feels "pressured" to have children and thinks the criticism she's received is unfair.

She shared previously: "I don't like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women - that you've failed yourself as a female because you haven't procreated. I don't think it's fair.

"You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn't mean you aren't mothering - dogs, friends, friends' children.

"This continually is said about me: that I was so career-driven and focused on myself; that I don't want to be a mother, and how selfish that is."
