'Growing up in a little town, man it's good to be here' – Koi Boys humbled by VMA victory

November 17, 2017

The Kiwi singing trio reflect on their meteoric rise to win Highest Selling Album of the Year at the VMAs.

Given it was only their second time attending the Vodafone Music Awards, Kiwi singing trio the Koi Boys said they were "speechless" when they realised they had won the Tui award for Highest Selling Album of the Year.

Members Danny Faifai, Kevin Keepa and Nuz Ngatai all reflected on their humble beginnings in small towns and what it took to get to the VMAs in Auckland.

"Growing up in a little town, man it's good to be here" Danny Faifai said.

Kevin Keepa reflected on his own childhood in Auckland.

"I used to roam these streets as a kid, get up to no good, and here I am standing with these brothers here, accepting an award, so lots to be thankful for sure," Kevin Keepa said.

Asked his immediate plans, Keepa was frank.

"Ah, have a drink. Oh you mean like musically?" he said.

Bandmate Nuz Ngatai revealed the Koi Boys musical plans.

"Back to the grind, we've just released our next album called Shake it, so we're really pushing that at the moment and hopefully come back [to the VMAs] next year," Ngatai said.
