Filming has begun in New Zealand on the adaption of Eleanor Catton's novel The Luminaries, with the series to feature acting talents like Erik Thomson and Richard Te Are.

The six-part adaption of Catton's 2013 Man Booker Prize-winning novel is set on the West Coast during the 1860s gold rush.

It follows Anna Wetherell, who sails from Britain to New Zealand where she meets and falls in love with Emery Staines.

Te Are, who played Teina Pora in Dark Places, and Thomson, from 800 Words and Packed to the Rafters, feature in the series alongside other Kiwi actors such as Yoson An from Mortal Engines and Dead Lucky.

Eve Hewson, from Robin Hood, The Knick and Bridge of Spies, plays Wetherell, while EastEnders actor Himesh Patel and Australian Ewen Leslie (The Cry, Top of the Lake) play Staines and Crosbie Wells respectively.

Eva Green, from Casino Royale, Penny Dreadful and Sin City, as Lydia Wells and Marton Csokas, who has starred in the The Equalizer, Lord of the Rings and Into the Badlands) play the roles of Lydia Wells and Francis Carver

The series will be broadcast on TVNZ 1 in New Zealand and BBC Two in the UK.
