'A book about male friendship' - Colin Hogg on his second book about mate Sam Hunt

November 1, 2018

The book is called Off the Road and captures some of Hunt’s wildest stories.

A new book aims to capture the essence of Sam Hunt, and it's written by the renowned New Zealand poet's best mate, Colin Hogg.

Called Sam Hunt Off The Road, it's the second book by Hogg about Hunt, his friend for almost three decades.

The pair exchanged some light-hearted banter in an interview on Seven Sharp at Hunt's home.

"I wouldn't normally write two books about someone," Hogg said.

Hunt chipped in: "I was going to propose a third."

But with Sam Hunt now 72, there's much more to tell.

"I knew Sam had to read it. That was the nervous bit," Hogg said.

"A large part of writing this book is wanting to catch something, to catch his spirit, what it's like being with him, knowing him, being in the room with him.

"It's a book about male friendship and I don't think it's written about much in NZ in a way that's intelligent."

Sam Hunt said he couldn't think of anyone better to write a book about him.

He also read some of his poetry in his inimitable style.
