1 NEWS has won the award for Best News Coverage at the 2018 New Zealand Television Awards held in Auckland tonight.
Reporter of the Year went to Jehan Casinader for his work on Sunday.
And TVNZ 1 Breakfast presenter Hayley Holt was announced as the Woman’s Day Television Personality of the Year winner, selected by public vote.
Overall, TVNZ people and programmes won 14 categories at the Huawei Mate20 New Zealand Television Awards.
TVNZ’s Head of News and Current Affairs John Gillespie says: “The New Zealand Television Awards are a great opportunity to come together as an industry, to recognise outstanding work and the importance of quality local journalism in New Zealand life.
“Our News and Current Affairs team delivers day in and day out for viewers - and I’m proud to see these efforts recognised.
“It was also fantastic to see Tini Molyneux honoured with Legend Award - she spent a big part of her working life with us at TVNZ and we are so proud to see her honoured for her long-standing contribution to broadcast journalism in New Zealand. Tino pai e te rangatira!”
Drama, reality, comedy, factual and web series made by local production houses to screen on TVNZ also took out top awards at tonight’s ceremony.
TVNZ OnDemand’s Baby Mama’s Club took out the NZ On Air Best Web Series; and Anika Moa was crowned Best Presenter: Entertainment for Anika Moa Unleashed.
Topp Country took out two awards including Best Lifestyle Programme and Best Director: Documentary/Factual (Felicity Morgan-Rhind); and Coast New Zealand won NZ On Air Best Factual Series.
The Casketeers took home the award for Best Original Reality Series; and My Kitchen Rules NZ was crowned the Stage & Screen Best Format Reality Series. Waka Huia was awarded Te Māngāi Paho Best Reo Programme.
Fresh from its four-award sweep at this month’s Television Craft Awards, The Dance Exponents - Why Does Love? took out a further award at tonight’s gala for Best Feature Drama.
Also in the drama category, 800 Words star Rick Donald was crowned Best Actor; and animated series Thunderbirds Are Go won Best Children’s Programme.
TVNZ Director of Content Cate Slater says: “We’re proud to see our local slate celebrated at tonight’s awards.
