Kiwi singer Lorde has apologised after posting a photo on her Instagram of a full bath, with the caption "And iiii will always love you" which many social media users took to be an insensitive joke aimed at deceased singer Whitney Houston.

Houston died in 2012 after accidentally drowning in a hotel bathtub in Los Angeles.

The post sparked backlash on Instagram, leading to the post being deleted within an hour of being posted and Lorde apologising in an Instagram story.

"Extremely, extremely poorly chosen quote," she wrote.

"I'm so sorry for offending anyone — I hadn't even put this together I was just excited to take a bath. I'm an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again."

"It's not my fkn day today", was her next post.

Users took to Twitter saying "Whitney was a legend. she was amazing. she was a queen. she was a strong black woman. I like lorde but this is truly disgusting."

Another one said, "C'mon Lorde out of all the lyrics to use for your bathtime u use Whitney lyrics.... Like for why??"

"Lorde is probably sitting in the tub not realizing what she just did" one user tweeted.

The Kiwi singer is still on her North American tour.
