Australian actor Geoffrey Rush will sue the Daily Telegraph newspaper for allegations published about his behaviour with a fellow actor on stage.

The Sydney Theatre Company says it received a complaint of “inappropriate behavior” against Rush, an allegation lawyers for the Oscar winner denied. The company wasn’t disclosing details of the behavior alleged to have occurred while the 66-year-old Australian actor was an employee. Media reports say the allegation dated from the theater’s production of “King Lear,” about two years ago. His lawyers deny Rush was involved in inappropriate behavior. (AP Photo/Michael Sohn, File)

"They have splashed spurious claims with bombastic titles on their front pages. This has created irreparable damage to my reputation," he told reporters in Melbourne.

Rush said his wife, daughter and son had also been hurt by the allegations.

"This situation is intolerable and I must now seek vindication of my good name through the courts in Australia."

The allegations date back to a Sydney Theatre Performance of King Lear from 2015.

The suit was filed on Friday. A court date is yet to be set.

Comment was being sought from the Daily Telegraph.
