John Key could make another Epsom gesture

Prime Minister John Key could make another public gesture aimed at Epsom voters, as a new poll shows the National Party is leading the way with voters.

While this may seem like good news for the Government, National is actually asking its supporters in the electorate to vote for the Act candidate, in order to secure greater support in Parliament.

But, a Colmar Brunton poll carried out by TVNZ's Q + A programme, found 44% of Epsom voters would vote for National MP Paul Goldsmith while 32% said they would vote for Act Party candidate David Seymour.

"We've said we're encouraging National supporters to vote for the Act candidate and are very happy with that," Mr Goldsmith said.

"National is popular in the Epsom electorate and my job is to maximise that party vote."

The survey shows National sitting with a comfortable lead in the Epsom electorate, with 60% of those polled saying they would vote for the party. The Green Party, in second place, trailed far behind with only 16%

When asked if they were aware that Prime Minister John Key is encouraging National Party supporters to give their electorate vote to the Act Party candidate, 70% said they were.

And when asked if this would change who they would give their electorate vote to, 45% said they would vote for Act's David Seymour, while 31% said they would still vote for National's Paul Goldsmith.

The majority of those polled, 47%, also say they support the arrangements Mr Key has made with the Act Party in Epsom.

In an electoral debate on Q + A this morning, Green Party candidate Julie Anne Genter says National telling voters to vote for Epsom's Act candidate is "undemocractic".

"The most democratic thing would be for people to be able to vote for the candidate they believe best represents them," she says.

When asked if he wanted to become the MP for Epsom, poll frontrunner Mr Goldsmith said his priority was to be a list MP in Parliament and that he was working hard to ensure National wins the party vote in Epsom.
