Australian PM demands please explain after Erdogan's inflammatory comments in wake of Christchurch attack

Australian PM Scott Morrison has demanded a please explain from Turkey's ambassador to Australia after their president reportedly threated Australians and New Zealanders after the Christchurch terrorist attack.

"Your grandparents came, some of them returned in coffins. If you come as well like your grandfathers, be sure that you will be gone like your grandfather," Tayyip Erdogan reportedly said in reference to any Kiwis or Australians who travelled to Gallipoli with anti-Muslim sentiments.

Mr Morrison told Ambassador Korhan Karakoç that he was "very offended" by the comments, saying they were not "accurate or truthful".

"The actions of the Australian and New Zealand government[s] have been consistent with our values of welcoming and supporting people from all around the world," ABC reported Mr Morrison as saying.

System of A Down’s Serj Tankian, an American of Armenian heritage who lives part-time in New Zealand, was also critical of Erdogan's comments.

“It’s time to tell Erdogan to shove it. NZ is a courageous and smart country and should itself suspend Gallipoli visits until Erdogan’s Turkey shifts from being a corrupt oligarchic plutocracy to a proper modern democratic state.”

Yesterday, NZ Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters announced he will be travelling to Turkey this week after visiting Indonesia to pay respect to those killed in the terror attack.

"Our current intention is then to travel onwards to Turkey, at the request of the Turkish Government, to attend a special ministerial meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation being held in Istanbul.

“This important event will allow New Zealand to join with our partners in standing against terrorism and speaking up for values such as understanding and religious tolerance."

Scott Morrison addressed media after today's tragic events in Christchurch which killed many people at two mosques.
