A rāhui is in place on Tongariro Alphine Crossing after a man died this morning.

Emergency services were alerted to a man suffering a medical event at Red Crater at around 8.40am after another person activated a locator beacon.

The man's body has since been recovered from the mountain and a karakia as been held at the Mangatepopo Road end of the crossing.

The rāhui, a form of tapu which unofficially closes off or restricts an area, will be in place until Tuesday morning while friends and family grieve.

The man's death has been referred to the Coroner.
