A diver who was reported missing off the Wairarapa coast this afternoon is still missing tonight.
Police were notified of the man's disappearance at Flat Point Beach at 12.58pm today, as he was diving in a party of three, who reported they were getting into difficulty.
Two of the party made it to shore but the third did not.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and another chopper searched the area for several hours along with local fishing vessels.
The Wellington Police Maritime Unit, Lady Elizabeth IV, travelled part way to the scene but was forced to turn back due to unfavourable weather conditions.
The naval vessel HMNZS Otago is also providing assistance by searching offshore portions of the area.
Some of the vessel's crew are assisting with onshore searches of the area.
